IN THE LIBRARY WITH ANA CORDOBA

GREETINGS, BOOKWORMS! I’m Aisha Kandisha, Head Librarian at Kandisha Press. Join me in the dusty stacks of the library I will never leave again as I chat with some of my favorite Women in Horror. Today we feature author Ana Cordoba!

Ana Cordoba is a Rhetoric/Writing  UAFS graduate with a 3.2 gpa. She has a poem titled “To Himself” published in the 2020 edition of Persephone edited by Hayleigh Worgan. She also has a poem titled “Dark Kinship” published in “Beautiful Tragedies 3, a collection of poems edited by Hellbound Books. She likes reading and writing dark and whimsy fantasy stories.

What do you believe are your strengths in writing? And when you feel you need to improve on a particular writing skill, how do you go about it?

My strengths in writing are creating strong, likeable characters that people will want to cheer for and evoking emotions in readers by displaying clear and informative descriptions. When I feel I need to improve on a particular writing skill, I seek advice from other established writers, such as my former college professors. I then read works that display the skill I need help with and to garner ideas on how I can utilize the examples from those works.

What are your thoughts on the book industry today, or more importantly, about the book community?

I have few personal experiences with today’s book industry, but from my few interactions, I see the community as a welcoming, supportive, and understanding society.

Do you feel it is getting harder or easier to make it as an independent author these days?

As I said before, I am a new author and have very little experience with the book community. From personal experience, it is harder to make it as an independent author. I struggle to promote my works because I forget to make posts about my books on my page. I hope to find a good publishing company that can help me with issues like that.

Tell us about your work. What story are you most proud of?

I have a poem published in the anthology Beautiful Tragedies 3 put together by Hellbound Books Publishing LLC. The poem in Beatufiul Tradedies 3 is titled Dark Kinship, which explores animal and spousal abuse. I also have a short story I sold to Dragon Soul Press where is was compiled in a anthology called Dragon Legends. The story is titled “The Work-oriented Mage, The Lovesick Werewolf, and The Obessive Dragon,” which is a typical princess in a castle guarded by a dragons setup, but with a twist. I am most proud of my poem “To Himself,” which was published in the anthology Persephone 2021, compiled by Hayleigh Worgan, because it was my first published work. The poem “To Himself” explores the madness of writing through the work of Edgar Allan Poe.

What are your upcoming works and plans for the future?

I am currently working on a poetry book for Ram Publications LLC. The poems have no set theme or subject. Most are just what pops into my head at certain points of the day. I don’t have any set plans other than continuing to submit my works to anthologies that will appreciate my stories.
