GREETINGS, BOOKWORMS! I’m Aisha Kandisha, Head Librarian at Kandisha Press. Join me in the dusty stacks of the library I will never leave again as I chat with some of my favorite Women in Horror. Today we feature author Sarah R, New!

What do you believe are your strengths in writing? And when you feel you need to improve on a particular writing skill, how do you go about it?
I feel like I come up with great ideas! Whether they get completely realized the way I expect them to initially is a different story… When it comes to trying to improve skills, I practice as much as I can. Going back to my earliest writing roots, I find writing fanfiction really helps me improve my skills as the characters are already fully realized.
What are your thoughts on the book industry today, or more importantly, about the book community?
As a relative outsider, I feel like the book industry, particularly in traditional publishing, can be really intimidating and overwhelming, whereas, from my own experience, independent publishing has been much more welcome. And while I think the book community can be scary at times, I’ve found so many friends and supporters in the community.
Do you feel it is getting harder or easier to make it as an independent author these days?
I feel like it’s a double-edged sword. I think we’re in a great time for independent publishing; it’s never been easier to find your audience, however, in the age of social media, it’s so easy to get lost in the hubbub.
Tell us about your work. What story are you most proud of?
I’m very proud of my novella Amissis Liberis. It came to me in a type of fever dream and was one of the easiest things for me to write, despite the horrific content inside. But one of the pieces I’m most proud of, It is an unpublished short story I wrote initially for an anthology, which is essentially a character study of this one, untethered woman. I hope it finds a home soon.
What are your upcoming works and plans for the future?
I have so many ideas and plans for the future that I can’t even pin them down. My big goal for the year was to finish three of my works in progress, so hopefully that! I have another novella that’s looking for a home, and I’m also flirting with the idea of self-publishing…
